Well that’s an unusual mix of things, but all to be found right here!

Three new pieces of artwork, and one tech/geek review. Let’s start with the artwork:

As you can no doubt guess, this was inspired by the werewolf design used in the ‘American Werewolf in London‘ movie.

So, I’ve been kept busy lately. As ever, all (and more!) are for sale in both my Etsy, and Boundless Gallery, stores.

On the geek front, I’ve been busy playing with my T-mobile G1 (aka: Google phone). £200 for a phone, ouch! But honestly, it’s money well spent. I’ve never been so impressed by a mobile phone, the things it can do are just amazing. Read my review of it to see what I mean…

Also, keep an eye out for my work appearing on the front page of Boundless Gallery on Sunday (tomorrow). Seems that I’ve been chosen to appear in their ‘Discover an Artist‘ section. From Boundless:

You will be among the artists and galleries featured on our “Discover an Artist” section on Sunday, Feb 8, 2009.

Each day we select a total of fifty artists and galleries to randomly appear on the homepage in the “Discover an Artist” tab. Artists are displayed five at a time and change every time the page is loaded, so each artist appears in about 10% of homepage views.

These fifty artists are also shown with up to three of their works on our “Discover an Artist” page. The artists are listed in a random order which changes hourly throughout the day.

Since it’s the festive season (presents and all that jazz) I thought it’d be nice to do a painting, but put it up on the site for people to download, print out, and put on their walls. My present to you, the visitors. So, here it is:

If you click on the preview image (above) it’ll load up a much larger, more detailed, scan of the original. Click print, frame it, and pass it along to your friends if they want one! If you want to make it look extra colourful, try printing it to photographic paper, the colours always look better on photo paper.

I’ve had a few requests from YouTube viewers, asking if I could do a ‘How-To’ video, on how I do the Bob Ross style in GIMP.

What I did this time was to focus on where the pointer is, and what I’m doing. I had to speed up the video (again) due to the 10 minute limit on YouTube, but I’m also uploading the full 40min video to Google Video.

Painting Ed Gein in GIMP

Rather than doing a video of this painting (since I wasn’t sure if it’d be a keeper in the first place) I thought I’d do a step-by-step of what I did to achieve this final result:

Ed Gein - The Finished Painting

First, I used Google Images to find a photo of Ed Gein which I pasted (and scaled up) in to my (initial) 600 x 800 image:

Next I thought I’d use a burgundy colour for my canvas, so I added a new layer, filled it with a nice red wine colour and reduced the opacity of the photo:

Next I used the paintbrush tool to create a rough sketch from the photo:
(it may seem like tracing, but people have used this light table effect for hundreds of years)

Then I created a new layer and began to add blocks of dark (shadow area) colour. Just one colour, putting down blobs then smearing the blobs.

And then the same idea with the highlights: new layer, initially I used white, but it was just too bright, so I reduced the opacity of that layer a touch:

It was at this point I was going to have turned off the photo layer and kept the two colours, but the photo layer (faint as it is) seemed to add something to it, so I kept it. I created a new layer and painted in a white background (just painting around Gein’s head) with a few dark (smeared) blobs on the outer edges.

Here, I felt it needed a bit more colour somewhere to make it look less ghoulish. So I created a new layer, filled it with an orangey/yellow colour and also applied a canvas texture to it (via the Filters menu):

The yellow canvas (above) became my top layer and from there I went through various layer properties until I found something that looked good. Setting the above layer to burn and with a 75% opacity.

The good thing about working with layers is that you can easily edit the layers to give you, almost, another painting. Here, all I did was alter most reddish layers to a more dark blue, but kept the yellow canvas layer as it was to give the blues a greenish tint:

Another GIMP painting

I installed the snazzy new 2.6 version of GIMP on my TabletPC and gave it a spin by doing another painting. I’m getting to actually prefer GIMP over PainterX. PainterX is incredibly powerful but it has too many options, mediums, brushes etc. GIMP is just nice and simple. Hopefully the KDE4 Krita will bring a middle ground between GIMP and PainterX.

Anyway… here’s the finished ‘painting’:
